I was looking at the priorities and got awfully confused. I assume it reflects the variety of proposals at the last meeting, rather than a coherent position. Some of the proposals sound quite sinister. 'To create one ”archaeological world”!' rather begs the question 'Whose archaeological world?' I'd hope that's actually a call for inclusivity rather than world domination.

On the other hand calls like 'We need to take action on the invention on cultural/national identities' do sound like attacks on the self-determination of subcultures.

As a collector of african art I see the whole thing from 2 sides. There are so many other iimportant problems, which makes it understandable, that people focus on getting food or finding peace instead of digging in the ground. On the other hand, if people from outside come, there is a big dange that a lot of this culture gets lost, stolen or faked.

I´m a collector of african art and I admit that I´m always torn in my heart. On one side there is such a huge culture, which is neglected in many parts of Africa, often stolen and transported - or - faked. So without help from outside I doubt there will be a chance to bring back the culture alife. On the other hand this is taking away the culture from the continent. A dangerous game, with no winner at the end.

Neil Asher Silberman wrote in the Washington Post (May 25, 2008; Page B01) that "Real Archaeologists Don't Wear Fedoras". He is "convinced that there's something misguided and destructive in this academic love affair with IndianaJones. It's not just that the films are harmlessly caricatured visions of old-fashioned archaeology; they are filled with destructive and dangerous stereotypes that undermine American archaeology's changing identity and goals.". See here.
